The Highland Companies, represented by John Lowndes, has undertaken a land assembly of over 6,000 acres of prime agricultural land, in and around Horning Mills, Honeywood, Redickville and other parts of Melancthon and Mulmur Townships. Much of this prime agricultural land sits atop a significant limestone deposit. In a letter dated June 24, 2009,to the the Township of Melancthon planner (PDF), Highland advised it would be filing an application (believed to be within 3 to 6 months from that date) for extraction of limestone, below the watertable, in the Township of Melancthon.
See attached letter from The Highland Companies (PDF), and notes from the “pre-application consultation” meeting, June 24, 2009.
The North Dufferin Agricultural and Community Task Force, Inc. (NDACT) has been formed to lead the opposition, with the goal of preserving and protecting prime potato land (a unique agricultural resource) and the acquifers feeding Melancthon, Mulmur and beyond, including being the headwaters of the Nottawasaga and Grand Rivers.
NDACT has a website, www.NDACT.com, which is constantly updated with information and recent activities on these issues.
At the Annual General Meeting of CORE held July 4, 2009, NDACT made a presentation.
As a result of this presentation and on the basis of a Motion adopted by the more than 70 people present, CORE is actively supporting NDACT, as its work may affect Mulmur, and is independently undertaking whatever steps are deemed necessary to ensure that the interests of Mulmur residents are not impacted by this application. |
