Why should you be concerned

Traffic

If you rely on the Airport Road to get to your home or business, you know how challenging it can be with its hills, curves and limited opportunities to pass. Add to this - impatient commuters, the occasional farm vehicle and even school busses and you have a road that has seen too many accidents and taken too many lives over the past few years. Now…add 300 slow moving gravel trucks, trucks that will be merging with the regular traffic in the middle of a particularly hilly section, trucks that will cause the premature deterioration of the pavement, trucks that will throw off loose gravel and mud and you get a recipe for disaster!

Water

The gravel in the proposed pit is mostly below the water table. The applicant wants approval to mine up to 20 meters below the water table. This activity could not only affect local wells but could disrupt the aquifer that feeds the Nottawasaga River system. The future of Lisle Creek could be in jeopardy. Other jurisdictions, like those along the Oak Ridges Moraine, have put restrictions on aggregate removal below the water table.

Wildlife

The subject property is located in a relatively unspoiled part of our world. Upland wildlife is abundant. The extended mining and processing of aggregate, as proposed, would disrupt the existing nature corridor. Wildlife would be forced to go around the pit area or vacate completely. After 20 years we wonder if wildlife will find its way back.

Quality of Life

For those of us who are lucky enough to live near the proposed pit, this operation will bring noise, pollution, ground vibrations and possible water disruptions, all of which will diminish the value of our properties and quality of life. While this type of disruption is to be expected with all pit operations we are not convinced that the value of the aggregate that will come from this specific pit warrants the amount of disruption that it will create.
